Solarwatt tackles grid congestion with battery inverters

Solarwatt GmbH Acquires Dutch Company REConvert

German solar energy systems manufacturer, Solarwatt GmbH, has acquired the Dutch company REConvert. This acquisition opens the door to new, intelligent solutions for large-scale energy storage, which will benefit commercial clients facing grid congestion issues in the Netherlands.

Mobility Powered by Solar Energy

For solar panel owners, charging electric vehicles using solar energy is simple, provided the right equipment is in place. However, storing excess energy when the car isn’t charging poses a greater challenge. Solarwatt and REConvert have collaborated for years, developing home batteries to store solar energy. REConvert, for example, played a role in the creation of the Solarwatt Battery Flex, which was introduced last year.

“With this acquisition, we are strengthening our expertise in power electronics for battery systems and inverters. It’s a significant step towards becoming a sector coupler. For our customers and the market, we are expanding energy storage options with REConvert’s solutions, which will now be branded as Solarwatt products”

Michiel van Schalkwijk, Managing Director at Solarwatt Benelux

A Strong Partnership

REConvert is now a sister company to Solarwatt, led jointly by Van Zwam and Solarwatt CTO Dr. Armin Froitzheim. Van Zwam expressed excitement about joining the Solarwatt family, emphasizing that the acquisition allows their team to focus on product development, backed by robust support in materials procurement, sales, logistics, and business development. He described the partnership as a “win-win situation.”

In addition to expanding Solarwatt’s product portfolio, both companies aim to address grid congestion in the Netherlands. The rapid growth of sustainable energy production in the country has outpaced grid capacity, leading to challenges in connecting commercial users to the power network.

“REConvert manufactures locally in the Netherlands, meaning Solarwatt now also has local production here. This acquisition provides us with a locally produced solution to the Dutch grid congestion problem,” added Van Zwam.
